Pashta
MaryMoon spent her youth as a social
activist and non-violent trainer; and then obtained
a Honours degree in World Religions followed by
a lay seminary degree, as well as training in
general and sexual abuse counselling. Her
background is primarily in pastoral care, as visiting
clergy for hospitals (10 yrs)
and federal prisons (20 yrs).
She has 30 years of experience
with developing and leading personalized ceremonies
for rites of passage. She
was one of the co-founders of Songs of Passage
(Bedside Singing for the Victoria
Hospice unit), and more currently, En-chanting
Beyond (Bedside Singing for
dying patients, birthing mothers, and people with
dementia). She graduated
from The Justice Institute as a mediator in 2011,
and offers a specific focus in end-of-life issues
through E~merging
Beyond. Her interest in a
less institutionalized form of dying/death started
at age 7 which evolved through working
with people with HIV/AIDS and end-stage dementia,
to becoming a Death Midwife with Journeying
Beyond. She is a co-founder
of CINDEA, as well as its web designer
and manager.
Mia Shinbrot has a BSc in computer
science from the University of Victoria, BC, and
has worked for over 30 years in software programming,
technical writing, editing, and transcription. She
trained for 5 years in public speaking through
Toastmasters, and has led numerous public ceremonies. She
has a background as a volunteer with nonprofit
organizations working on social concerns. Her
passion for social reform and collaborative work,
plus an interest in end-of-life issues, led her
to co-create CINDEA. She
is presently the central facilitator and recording
secretary of the organization.
